Disclosure: Amberjack partnered with me on this series and sent the shoes. The shop links below are affiliate links, so if you buy through one, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. The opinions are my own, and I've worn Amberjack for years.
Shoes are one of those things you notice more the older you get. The right pair for the right occasion makes a real difference, and I want style, comfort and quality in the same shoe. So when Amberjack asked me to review their lineup, I wore every pair and walked through each one the way I would with a friend: who it's for, who should skip it, and how it feels after a full day on your feet.
Every pair is designed in Brooklyn and made in Portugal, and Amberjack backs each one with a 2-year warranty, free shipping and free returns. Here's the full series so far.
The Low-Top: the leather sneaker I wear most
The Low-Top is the pair I keep reaching for when I want a clean sneaker that still works with a blazer. A-grade full-grain leather, a sheepskin lining, a removable heat-activated insole for arch support, and an EVA outsole with rubber grip pods.
Good for: everyday wear, smart-casual outfits, and anyone who wants one sneaker that goes with almost everything.
Price: $159. Shop The Low-Top (affiliate link)
The Drift: the knit sneaker I'd pack for every trip
The Drift was comfortable from the first few steps, with no break-in needed. It has a water-repellent knit upper, a removable heat-activated insole, and a two-tone outsole that hides the dirt a white shoe usually shows. It also packs almost flat, which is why it's in my suitcase every trip.
Good for: vacations, warm weather, no-sock days, and dressing up with slacks or down with shorts.
Skip it if: you want a dressier or firmer shoe, or you need something for cold, wet winters.
Price: $149. Shop The Drift (affiliate link)
The Axis: the sneaker that can dress up
The Axis is the most cushioned Amberjack I've tried, with noticeably more bounce than the Low-Top or the Drift. Full-grain leather and water-repellent suede give it a more refined look than most comfort sneakers. I took it out on the longboard, squish-tested it for packing, and compared it with the Olukai sneakers I own.
Good for: all-day wear, travel, city walking, and dressing up a casual outfit. The removable insole makes it easy to swap in your own orthotics.
Skip it if: you don't want to keep a white sole clean (every colorway has one).
Price: $185. Shop The Axis (affiliate link)
The Chukka: a daily boot with a sneaker sole
The Chukka in Chestnut & Mocha full-grain leather is one of my favorites. The mid-cut gives you the comfort of a shoe with the look of a boot, and the leather tone reminds me of the Wolverine 1000 Mile boots I've owned. It has a sheepskin lining, a padded tongue, and an athletic rubber outsole that actually grips. I've nearly gone sliding on Michigan ice in the wrong boots, so that matters to me.
Good for: fall and winter daily wear, slick sidewalks, and jeans or slacks with a tucked shirt or a plain white tee.
Skip it if: you want a classic boot with a traditional sole you'll resole over the years.
Fit tip: loosen the laces all the way before you put them on the first time. They arrive laced tight, and it's easy to think they don't fit when they do.
Price: $205. Shop The Chukka (affiliate link)
The Regent: the dress shoe I'd buy for my groomsmen
I've shot a lot of weddings and seen a lot of shoes, and the Regent is a step above. It's a dress shoe in A-grade full-grain leather with the Blake stitch (yes, that's really what it's called), but it's built for all-day comfort: a flexible athletic TPU outsole, a moisture-wicking recycled Lycra lining, and a removable heat-activated insole. Amberjack also sells a matching belt, which makes it an easy groomsmen gift.
Good for: weddings, the office, speaking events, upscale dinners, and anyone on their feet all day in dress shoes. It comes in standard and wide.
Skip it if: you want a traditional wood sole, a wingtip, or a cheaper pair you'll only wear once or twice.
Price: $250. Shop The Regent (affiliate link)
