Here is what a long stay at Hotel La Croix in Waikiki looks like from behind the camera.
We have spent more than three weeks at La Croix across our stays in Honolulu, which is longer than we have spent at any other hotel. It has become the place we book without comparing options, and some of the photographs below now live on the hotel's own website. What follows is our experience and the media that came out of it.
The hotel
La Croix sits at the crossroads of Kalākaua and Kūhiō avenues, at the quieter Fort DeRussy end of Waikiki. That address is the whole point: the park and the beach are a couple of minutes one way, the luxury row shops the other, and the busier stretch of Kalākaua is close enough to walk to and far enough away to sleep. There is a saltwater infinity pool with the park beyond the edge, a co-ed parkview sauna, Palms Lounge by the pool, and complimentary coffee around the clock. Upper-tier rooms get Monkeypod Lounge, a quiet perch above the street with fruit and coffee in the morning and drinks at sunset.
Breakfast
This is the part we talk about most. Breakfast at La Croix became the anchor of every day we spent there. It is the kind of morning that makes a three-week stay feel like living in a neighbourhood rather than checking into a hotel, and it is one of the reasons we keep coming back.
On foot
Everything we needed was walkable. The shops along Kalākaua and the luxury row are a short stroll, Fort DeRussy Park is right there for a run or an evening walk, and there are food trucks a few blocks away that we ended up at more nights than we planned. Over a long stay that matters more than any single amenity: you stop thinking about transport and start living where you are.
Worth knowing
- Good for a long stay. Walkable, quiet at night, and set up so you do not have to leave the neighbourhood.
- Ask about the upper-tier rooms for Monkeypod Lounge access and the park views.
- Take the free beach gear. Chairs, mats, snorkels and body boards are there for the asking.
- Check the activities calendar. Lei making, hula, sunrise yoga and shave ice are complimentary during the week.
- Bring a camera for the morning. The light on the park side is the best of the day.
If you want a base in Waikiki that is walkable, calm and easy to stay in for weeks rather than nights, Hotel La Croix is the one we recommend.
