LucidWild Estate: An Afternoon in the Dundee Hills

Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Contemporary design and mid century warmth blitzed with something industrial and cave like. LucidWild Estate opened at the top of Worden Hill Road in the Dundee Hills, and one of the owners met us at the front door. A tasting, a private cave tour, and bottles to go on a November afternoon.

Some places you photograph. Some places you just want to stay in. LucidWild Estate is both, and it took about four steps through the front door to know it. One of the owners met us there. Not a host, not a greeter. An owner, welcoming us in like we had been invited over.

This is contemporary design and mid century warmth blitzed with something industrial and cave like, and it works. Soft light, board formed concrete, long sightlines out over the Dundee Hills. It reads as a warm, relaxed room in the afternoon and then quietly turns into a secret lair, the kind of exclusive and private getaway spot you do not want to tell people about. I am telling you anyway.

The estate

LucidWild sits at the top of Worden Hill Road in the heart of the Dundee Hills AVA, on red volcanic Jory soil, less than thirty miles southwest of Portland. The vines were planted roughly three decades ago on what used to be Bella Vida Vineyard, and the estate is farmed one hundred percent dry, with no irrigation at all. New name, old roots. The SkyTerraces and WineCaves are the new part, and they are the reason this place feels unlike anywhere else in the valley.

The tasting

Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, poured slowly, explained without a script. We tasted, we toured the caves privately, and we walked out with bottles to go. Pinot Noir is one of my favorite grapes anywhere, and from this region it is my all time favorite. Dundee Hills Pinot has a volcanic weight to it that I keep chasing everywhere else and rarely find.

Treatment was first class from the door onward. That is not a small thing in a room this new.

Right down the block

Winderlea is a few minutes down the same road, biodynamic and B Corp certified, with a light filled tasting room looking straight out into the natural amphitheater of the hills. The vineyard there was planted in the 1970s, so it is another case of an old site that has been transformed, and it has become a real fan favorite. We joined their wine club on our very first trip to the Willamette, which tells you how quickly that room gets you.

Others worth your day

Stoller Family Estate in Dayton is the classic choice for a reason. It is the largest contiguous vineyard in the Dundee Hills, the winery was the first in the world to earn LEED Gold, and the tasting room is genuinely hard to leave.

  • White Rose Estate is the small one I keep sending people to. We have walked this one ourselves. A compact estate block, plantings right up against you, and a view that does most of the talking.
  • Sokol Blosser has been farming this ground since 1971 and is about as close to Oregon wine history as you can get.
  • Archery Summit is the Pinot Noir pilgrimage, with estate acreage spread across the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills.
  • Domaine Drouhin Oregon is just up the road from White Rose and is Burgundy transplanted, with a four level gravity flow winery that is worth the visit on its own.
  • Argyle sits in downtown Dundee and is where you go for sparkling.

We have made a handful of trips out now, and the list keeps getting longer rather than shorter. If you are mapping a route, the Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association and Willamette Valley Wineries are the two places I would plan from.

On the price of the bottle

Supporting these wineries costs a little more than you are used to seeing at your local bottle shop. That is the point. These are largely independent and family owned operations farming small acreage by hand and making a few hundred cases of a given wine. You are not paying for a label. You are paying for a family, a hillside, and a vintage that only happened once.

Go look at the calendar

Every one of these places runs events all year round. Harvest dinners, release parties, vineyard hikes, winemaker tastings, live music on the terrace. Check the events page before you book a plain tasting, because the best afternoons we have had out here were the ones we did not plan.

Worth knowing

  • LucidWild Estate: 9380 NE Worden Hill Road, Dundee, Oregon. Adults only, and reservations are the way to go.
  • The estate is dry farmed and LIVE certified, and the wines are single vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling.
  • The WineCaves and SkyTerraces are separate experiences. Ask about both when you book.
  • Winderlea is a short drive down Worden Hill Road, so the two pair naturally in one afternoon.
  • White Rose Estate and Domaine Drouhin are both on the Dayton side and sit close together, so they pair well on the same run.
  • Bottles to go are worth the trunk space. Production is small and most of it does not travel.
