O-Ku Jax Beach: Cocktails, Small Plates and Sushi on the Rooftop

Jacksonville Beach, Florida

A spring evening at O-Ku in Jax Beach: cocktails at the rooftop bar with the ocean at the end of the street, a round of starters to share, and sushi that earns its reputation as the best in Jacksonville Beach. Here is what it looked like from behind the camera.

Here is what a spring evening at O-Ku in Jacksonville Beach looks like from behind the camera.

We drove up from Palm Coast for a night out at the beach and built it around O-Ku: cocktails first, then a table of starters to share, then sushi. It is the kind of restaurant where the room, the plates and the light all photograph well, so the camera came along. What follows is our visit and the images that came out of it.

The restaurant

O-Ku sits at the corner of 1st Street North and 4th Avenue in the middle of Jax Beach, one block from the sand. It is part of the Indigo Road Hospitality Group out of Charleston, with sister locations in Charleston, Atlanta, Nashville and Washington, D.C. The Jacksonville Beach location opened in early 2022 and has the layout the others do not: a dining room and sushi counter downstairs, and a rooftop bar and terrace upstairs with a view down the street to the Atlantic. In spring, with the evenings warm and the light going late, the roof is the reason to come.

Cocktails on the rooftop

We started upstairs. The rooftop bar leans on Japanese spirits and citrus, and the cocktail list is where O-Ku separates itself from the other sushi spots along the beach. Order a couple, take the seats along the rail, and give it twenty minutes. The light at golden hour on the roof is the best of the night, and it is worth having the camera out before the sun drops behind the buildings behind you.

Starters

The menu is built to share. The starters run from small bites to larger plates, and the right move for a table of two or three is to order a spread and let them land as they come. Everything is plated for a photograph, which for a food photographer is either a gift or a trap depending on how hungry you are.

Sushi

Then the reason O-Ku exists. The fish is sourced from markets in Tokyo and Hawaii alongside local and seasonal catch, and the kitchen leans traditional on the nigiri and sashimi while the specialty rolls carry the beach crowd. We ordered a mix of nigiri and a few rolls and let the counter guide the rest. If you want the full experience, the omakase is the way to do it, with a sake pairing available.

Worth knowing

  • Book ahead. O-Ku takes reservations and fills on weekends, and the rooftop is often first come, first served, so arrive early if the roof is the goal.
  • Come for golden hour. The rooftop faces the beach and the light before sunset is the best of the night.
  • Order to share. The menu is small plates, rolls and nigiri, so plan on a few plates per person.
  • Weeknights are quieter. Tuesday to Thursday is the easier night for a table on the roof and a calmer room.
  • Parking is street and public lots. Give yourself a few extra minutes in season.

If you are looking for the best sushi in Jacksonville Beach with a rooftop bar to start the night, O-Ku Jax Beach is the one we recommend.
